The wolf spider is one of the most common spiders found in the United States. Although the wolf spider is not deadly, many people are afraid of the spider because of its large size and formidable appearance. Scientists have identified as many as 125 different species of wolf spiders in the U.S. The wolf spider is approximately ½ to 2 inches in length, hairy in appearance with orange-brown to grey-black coloring that can be found with stripes of varying colors. The wolf spider has eight eyes that consist of three rows of different sizes. Two medium-sized eyes are located on the top of its head, with two larger eyes in front and four smaller eyes below. Like most other spiders, the wolf spider has eight legs, but it differs in appearance from many other spiders because of the addition of two arm-like appendages called pedipalps that extend out in front. Young spiders are similar in appearance to adults and the mother spider will sometimes carry their young on their backs until they can fend for themselves.
Where Do Wolf Spiders Live in Your House or Yard
The wolf spider can live anywhere where other insects can be found to feed upon. Wolf spiders prefer low lying areas and can be found under leaves, firewood, discarded gardening equipment or other items stacked on the ground. Inside homes, they can typically be found around doors and windows, in indoor plants and basements and garages. Wolf spiders are sometimes referred to as hunting or ground spiders because of their prevalence for hunting on the ground level. The wolf spider does not build webs but instead hunts for prey at night. Wolf spiders are solitary and prefer to hunt alone. A wolf spider's diet consists of a variety of insects but they are especially fond of crickets, grasshoppers, houseflies and cockroaches among others.
