How to Get Rid of Western Drywood Termites in Florence, TX; Termite Swarmer Identification, Inspection & More

|

The basics of termites are familiar to most locals. There are 45 types of termite species that fall into one of three categories and found across the world. These are subterranean, dry wood, and damp wood termites. To help people identify dry wood termites, we at A-Tex Pest Management would like to elaborate on the basics.

Drywood Termite Identification

A distinctive forehead that slopes down gradually from the top of the head is found on dry wood soldier termites. From the side view, it appears flattened to slightly rounded. An enlarged and clublike third segment makes up their antennae. When viewed from the top, the top body plate, known as the pronotum, is wide or wider than the head. The pronotum and the abdomen are dark brown and dry wood swarmers have an orange-brown head. They feature a blackish membrane and pigmented veins. Their wings are a smoky coloring.

Drywood Termite Wood Damage

With a moisture content under 12% and eating the wood they tunnel through, dry wood termites prefer dry woods. Drywood termites do not require soil, unlike most other termites. Within the wood they are consuming, these termites reside and are more or fewer homebodies. Leaving the nymphs to do most of the labor, these termites do not have a worker class. Inflicting damage to the interior structures of homes and businesses, dry wood termites can cause extensive repairs. From being shipped from manufacturers producing these products, these termites can easily infest picture frames, furniture, and lumber and have expanded their infestation areas. Doors, attics, window frames, and other exposed areas are most likely to be infested if these termites will dive into a stack of firewood. Swarmers will re-infest the same places according to most because they are believed to be either forgetful or creatures of habit.

Drywood Termite Swarmers

Looking for cracks or knotholes in wood to penetrate, dry wood termites will swarm to look for a prospective home. To excavate the chamber, the swarmers will gnaw a small tunnel and then close it off and mate. By the fourth year, the colony can anywhere from 70-700 members though at the end of the first year they may have 20 nymphs and 1 soldier, every year they continue to grow their numbers. Swarming usually occurs in September through November for dry wood termites and they thrive in the sunny weather of around 80 degrees. In July, they may swarm in the cooler climates.
