Termite Inspection & Treatment for Formosan Subterranean & Southeastern Drywood Termites in Florence, TX

|

Termites are some of the worst pests to discover inside your home. The presence of termites inside or near the home is a sign that they can be destroying your residence. During the mid-summer season, termite activity is at its height and the colony is at its busiest. There are two major species of termites in Texas that are found inside our homes. A-Tex Pest Management will cover the common termite species found destroying our homes in Texas and what you can do to protect your home.

Formosan Subterranean Termites

Formosan Subterranean termites, or mostly referred to as just subterranean termites are common. Subterranean termites have the greatest presence throughout America. Subterranean termites are sensitive to heat which is why they will tunnel through the soil. Subterranean termites require cellulose as a primary food source which is wood. Subterranean termites will feed on dead or dying trees or on wooden fences, decks, or the woodwork inside your home. As there are several species of subterranean termites, a Formosan subterranean termite is the one species that dominate Texas. Formosan subterranean termites are some of the more aggressive species that invade and can damage a home in a single summer. The Formosan subterranean termite colony can grow much more rapidly than other termite species. Formosan subterranean termites are considered bad news when they are found inside the home.

Southeastern Drywood Termites

Southeastern Drywood termites are not sensitive to the heat. They are able to stay above ground as they forage. Southeastern Drywood termites will nest directly into the wood, unlike subterranean termites that forage and will travel great distances to find a food source. Southeastern Drywood termite colonies are small in number. However, the reproductive members of the colony will breed as early as spring and as late as fall here in Texas. What makes Southeastern Drywood termites such a problem is they can infest and feed on healthy trees and strong wood, unlike subterranean who seek out damp or weak wood.

How to Get Rid of Termites

If termites are found inside your home, it is important to react quickly to stop the damage or the threat they can pose to your home. There are a number of ways a professional service treats and removes termites in your home. At times a professional pest control service will do a soil treatment where a liquid termiticide is applied to the soil and specifically in the site the termite may be nesting. The same liquid termiticide can also be used to treat wood where the termites are active. Like ant bait, it can also be used where the worker termites can take the bait back to the colony. If termites are found inside the home, in more severe cases the entire home may need to be fumigated.
