There are some areas that you never want to see pests. When you go out to eat at a restaurant you never want to see a pest such as a roach crawling around. That also means that you don’t want to see them in your own kitchen. Pests are bothersome no matter where they are at but when you picture them in and near the food, you are going to eat it tops off the list of gross interactions. You don’t want to think that you are putting food in your mouth that a pest was walking around on or even taking a bite only to find that the pest is in your mouth. There are some pests that are commonly found in your pantry which is where you keep the food that you are storing. One of the most common pantry pests is called a weevil. They are troublesome and should be taken care of right away to protect your food storage. A-Tex Pest Management offers helpful tips to deal with weevils in your pantry.
Are Weevils Harmful?
The weevil is a pest that you will find in some of the foods in your pantry. They are actually beetle and they love to eat your cereal, flour, grain, beans, rice and even nuts. The problem is that the weevil is not just there to feed on your food but they are also there to lay their eggs. This is what sets them apart from other pests that feed on your food. The eggs will eventually hatch and then the larvae will eat the food they were born in. They are very small and are about 1/16th of an inch and the adults are dark in color. They can come in from outdoors or they can be in the food that you get from the store.
Signs of Weevils in Flour, Rice & Grains
It might be hard to know if you have weevils but there are some things that you can do. Weevils, of course, hang out in the foods in your pantries such as your bag of flour, rice or other grains. When you go to use your stark white flour and notice specs of brown in the bag it is likely weevils. You want to spread it out and watch for signs of movement. The movement can be the larvae or adult beetles. If you think that you have weevils it is important to not use the food and call a pest service to do an inspection.
How to Keep Weevils Out
When it comes to weevils they can be hard to deal with. The best thing that you can do is to throw out any and all boxes and bags in your pantry that have been opened. Then clear out the rest of the foods and make sure that your pantry is cleaned properly and disinfected. You also want to call out for pest control to make sure that your home is treated for weevils and other pests as well.
